DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Patient Consultation and Clinical Assessment
- Conduct comprehensive medical consultations by obtaining patient history, reviewing symptoms, and performing physical examinations.
- Use clinical tools and diagnostic acumen to assess patient conditions accurately.
- Offer culturally sensitive and empathetic care while respecting patient confidentiality and rights.
Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
- Diagnose a wide spectrum of illnesses and injuries across all age groups using evidence-based guidelines.
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans tailored to patient needs.
- Continuously evaluate and adjust treatment plans based on patient response and progress.
Prescribing and Medication Management
- Prescribe medications, therapies, and other interventions following MOH (Ministry of Health) and WHO treatment protocols.
- Monitor for potential drug interactions, side effects, and adherence issues, particularly for chronic care patients.
- Counsel patients on medication use, dosage, and potential side effects to enhance compliance.
Emergency and Acute Care Management
- Provide immediate medical attention for emergency cases, including trauma, acute infections, and chronic condition exacerbations.
- Initiate life-saving interventions such as airway management, fluid resuscitation, or emergency referrals.
- Maintain readiness for handling high-pressure situations with confidence and clinical clarity.
Minor Procedures and Surgical Interventions
- Perform routine minor surgical procedures such as wound suturing, incision and drainage, removal of foreign bodies, and basic obstetric procedures.
- Ensure aseptic techniques are strictly adhered to during all procedures.
- Manage pre- and post-operative care for minor interventions performed in-house.
Referral and Coordination of Specialized Care
- Identify cases that require specialist review or higher-level care and coordinate timely referrals.
- Prepare comprehensive referral notes and liaise with referral hospitals to ensure continuity of care.
- Follow up on referred cases to track patient outcomes and reintegrate patients into facility care when appropriate.
Health Education and Preventive Care
- Educate patients and their families on disease prevention, lifestyle modifications, nutrition, hygiene, and medication adherence.
- Participate in community outreach programs including immunization drives, screening camps, and awareness campaigns.
- Support health promotion strategies that align with national public health goals.
Record-Keeping and Documentation
- Maintain accurate, legible, and up-to-date patient records both in paper and electronic formats.
- Document all clinical encounters, diagnoses, prescriptions, and procedures in compliance with facility and regulatory standards.
- Use EMR systems effectively for data entry, patient follow-ups, and reporting.
Infection Prevention and Safety Compliance
- Adhere to all infection prevention and control protocols including hand hygiene, PPE use, and patient isolation when required.
- Report and act promptly on suspected infection outbreaks or breaches in safety procedures.
- Promote a culture of safety for both patients and staff within the facility.
KEY REQUIREMENT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATION
- Diploma or Degree in Clinical Medicine and Surgery from a recognized institution
- Must be licensed and in good standing with the Clinical Officers Council of Kenya
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant clinical experience in a busy healthcare facility
- Proven ability to handle a wide range of medical conditions, from acute to chronic
- Strong diagnostic and clinical decision-making skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
