DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Fibre Optic Installation

  • Install Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Fibre-to-the-Business (FTTB) connections.
  • Pull, route, and secure fibre optic and Cat6 cables according to installation standards.
  • Perform cable termination, labelling, and testing to ensure optimal network performance.
  • Install customer premises equipment (CPE), routers, switches, and related networking devices.
  • Configure internet connectivity and verify service functionality before handover.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Diagnose and resolve fibre optic network faults and customer connectivity issues.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on fibre infrastructure.
  • Identify cable faults, signal loss, and equipment failures using appropriate testing equipment.
  • Replace damaged cables, connectors, and networking hardware as required.
  • Respond promptly to service outages and emergency maintenance requests.

Fibre Splicing & Network Testing

  • Perform fibre optic splicing using fusion splicing equipment.
  • Conduct Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) testing and power meter testing to identify faults.
  • Test network performance and ensure installations meet required quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of splicing, testing, and repair activities.

Customer Service

  • Interact professionally with customers during installations and maintenance visits.
  • Explain equipment usage and provide basic troubleshooting guidance.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction through timely and quality service delivery.
  • Address customer concerns professionally and escalate unresolved issues where necessary.

Safety & Compliance

  • Safely climb electrical and telecommunications poles using approved climbing equipment.
  • Comply with occupational health and safety regulations while working at heights.
  • Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Maintain company tools, testing equipment, and vehicles in good working condition.
  • Report safety hazards, incidents, or damaged infrastructure promptly.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Complete installation reports, maintenance logs, and service tickets accurately.
  • Update work orders and customer records in the company’s systems.
  • Record materials used and report inventory requirements.
  • Escalate complex technical issues to the Network Operations Centre (NOC) or supervisors.

KEY REQUIREMENT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATION

  • Diploma in Telecommunications, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Relevant certifications in Fibre Optics or Networking (e.g., FOA, CCNA) are an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in fibre optic installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting within an ISP or telecommunications environment.
  • Practical experience climbing electrical or telecommunications poles.
  • Hands-on experience with FTTH deployments and customer installations.
  • Strong knowledge of fibre optic installation and maintenance techniques.
  • Proficiency in fibre splicing and fibre testing equipment (OTDR, power meter, visual fault locator).
  • Experience with Cat6 cable termination and structured cabling.
  • Good understanding of networking concepts, including IP addressing, routers, switches, and Wi-Fi configuration.
