DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Livestock Health Management

• Monitor the daily health and condition of cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry and identify signs of illness, injury, or abnormal behavior.
• Diagnose and treat common livestock diseases, infections, injuries, and other health conditions.
• Administer appropriate medications, vaccinations, dewormers, and other veterinary treatments in accordance with professional guidelines.
• Maintain accurate health records for individual animals, herds, flocks, treatments, and medical interventions.

 Disease Prevention and Herd Health Programs

• Develop and implement preventive healthcare and vaccination programs for livestock.
• Conduct routine health checks and recommend appropriate measures to prevent disease outbreaks.
• Monitor disease trends and establish appropriate quarantine, isolation, and biosecurity measures where necessary.
• Advise farm management on parasite control, vaccination schedules, nutrition, hygiene, and other factors affecting livestock health.

Animal Welfare and Farm Productivity

• Ensure livestock are kept, handled, transported, and treated in accordance with appropriate animal welfare standards.
• Monitor animal body condition, growth, reproduction, and general productivity and recommend corrective measures where required.
• Work with farm staff to improve animal handling, housing, feeding, hygiene, and other husbandry practices.
• Support measures aimed at reducing livestock mortality, improving productivity, and maintaining healthy herds and flocks.

Veterinary Procedures, Medicines and Supplies

• Perform routine veterinary procedures and provide basic medical and emergency care to livestock as required.
• Manage the proper use, storage, and administration of veterinary medicines, vaccines, and other medical supplies.
• Monitor veterinary stock levels and advise management on medicines, vaccines, equipment, and other supplies required.
• Ensure appropriate withdrawal periods and veterinary treatment protocols are observed for animals intended for food production.

Reporting, Compliance and Farm Support

• Prepare regular reports on animal health, treatments, mortality, disease cases, vaccinations, and other veterinary activities.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date veterinary records and documentation for the farm.
• Ensure veterinary practices comply with applicable animal health, welfare, food safety, and regulatory requirements.
• Train and guide farm workers on disease recognition, animal handling, hygiene, biosecurity, and basic livestock health practices.

KEY REQUIREMENT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATION

• Degree, Diploma, or Certificate in Animal Health and Production, Veterinary Medicine, or a related field.
• Must be registered with the Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB).
• Minimum of 3 years’ hands-on technical experience working with livestock.
• Proven practical experience with cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry.
• Good knowledge of livestock diseases, vaccination programs, parasite control, treatment protocols, and animal welfare.
• Practical experience in farm-based livestock health management is highly desirable.
• Ability to work in a rural farm environment and respond to animal health emergencies when required.
