PRESS BRAKE MACHINE OPERATOR (SHEET METAL BENDING)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Machine Operation and Sheet Metal Bending

• Operate CNC or hydraulic press brake machines to bend sheet metal according to technical drawings, production specifications, and required tolerances.
• Adjust machine parameters, including bend angle, back gauge position, stroke depth, and bending sequence, to achieve accurate results.
• Monitor machine performance and inspect bent components to ensure consistency, dimensional accuracy, and quality.

 Machine Setup and Tooling

• Set up and install appropriate tooling, including V-dies, gooseneck punches, and radiused tooling, based on the required bending operation.
• Select suitable tonnage, tooling combinations, and machine settings according to material type, thickness, bend radius, and component design.
• Conduct pre-operation checks to confirm correct tooling alignment, machine readiness, and safe operating conditions.

 Technical Drawing Interpretation and Production

• Read and interpret engineering drawings, flat patterns, bending specifications, and fabrication instructions.
• Calculate or verify bend allowances, bend deductions, and material orientation where required to achieve accurate finished dimensions.
• Coordinate with fabrication personnel and production supervisors to meet daily targets and ensure components meet specified requirements.

Quality Control and Troubleshooting

• Inspect finished components for bend angles, dimensions, alignment, surface defects, and compliance with technical specifications.
• Identify and correct common bending issues, including incorrect angles, material distortion, marking, and dimensional inaccuracies.
• Report machine faults, tooling defects, and recurring quality problems, and assist with corrective actions to minimise rework and material wastage.

Maintenance, Safety, and Workshop Management

• Perform routine machine checks and basic preventive maintenance to maintain equipment performance and reliability.
• Follow machine operating procedures and workplace safety requirements, including the safe handling of sheet metal and proper use of personal protective equipment.
• Maintain an organised work area, store tooling correctly, and report equipment malfunctions or unsafe conditions promptly.

KEY REQUIREMENT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATION

• Minimum of 2 years’ hands-on experience operating CNC or hydraulic press brake machines.
• Proven experience in sheet metal bending, metal fabrication, or industrial manufacturing.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, flat patterns, and bending specifications, with practical knowledge of tooling selection and machine setup.
• Strong technical skills in press brake operation, sheet metal bending, and machine setup.
• High attention to detail, accuracy, and dimensional precision when working to specified tolerances.
• Good troubleshooting, problem-solving, teamwork, time management, and workplace safety skills.
